We went to Blackheath to go to the markets. We were hungry and decided to look for somewhere to eat and we found Wattle Cafe. The place was busy, more busy than anywhere else. Found a table and sat down. We should have left when we notice how shabby the place was, of course it may be everyone's used to it. We were handed a bright yellow single page laminated. We got down to business to eat. It was a small menu with limited choice but extensive drink options and decided on the BLT. The coffee was good and the milkshake made just right. Then the food arrived and we were stunned into silence, on the plate sat our BLT made with wonderfully extra thick bread and good ingredients - the bacon was beautifully cooked, the tomato nicely sliced and some nice salad but the bread hadn't been toasted. We checked others in the cafe and this seemed to a theme. Why have such great thick slices of bread when you dont intend to toast them? The aura of the meal became stilted. The ingredients are great but not the bread it wasn't crunchy - toasted but soft and fluffy white bread! It seems this cafe has an aversion to toasting and once you have the sandwich it's too late. The lady nearby had a bacon & egg roll also not toasted, others were eating eggs and whatever but their slab of bread wasn't toasted.

We choose that that café over the other ones because it was spacious and the sign at the door said "baby change room". Having a 1yr old with us, that was a winner. Baby chairs were available and the big family size tables are always welcoming.

*A side note I'd like to add is a commendation for Tegan, whose genuine warmth, positivity and personal interest as she worked was really refreshing to come across. It won me back for an afternoon snack of a fresh juice and scone with jam and cream. Even as the cafe filled up and with some large orders coming through, and pressure on, she carried out her service with a smile that is often lacking in the customer service industry. Well done Tegan! Lovely to meet you, you're a valuable asset to your employer :)

It should be noted 2 BLT, a coffee and a milkshake cost me as much as I would pay for a full breakfast with all the trimmings and some juice.

The fire was out when we arrived but the staff put it back on as soon as we asked and it was roaring in no time which made the place very comfy.

My wife had the vegetarian breakky and soy cap and I had the farmyard breakky with one of their juice. Both the coffee and juice were very nice.

Add to that good coffee and a bacon and egg roll fit for a king, and it was a most welcome stay to relax and recharge, ready to continue more Blue Mountains adventures.

I stumbled upon the Wattle Cafe after a morning hiking in the Blackheath area, on what was a beautiful, sunny winters day with a cool chill in the air.

The food was nothing fancy but very good with fresh ingredients, well prepared, arrived in a very reasonable time and last but not least very generous servings. The meals were very good value.

The next thing was the good ol' fashioned table service, with a smile and warmth that was very personable and genuine.

The first thing that literally warmed me to the place was the well-stoked fire pleasantly crackling away in the corner.
